My week in training started off well … and then slowly I started to feel ill. At first I thought it was just the sniffles/a cold — but it soon started developing into bronchitis. I had gone through pretty much the entire year without a fit of bronchitis so I was gutted to feel so ill. I thought I could fight it off, but by the end of the week, I found myself flat on my back barely able to sit up. It sucked!

Still, the times that I did train went well!

Last week the ‘theme’ of my week was ‘Facing my Fears.’ I think if I had to choose one for this week, it would be — Finding Balance.

At the moment I feel like I’ve taken a lot on. I started doing Hot Yoga mainly because I got a voucher for a 75% discount on a group of 8 classes. It was an incredible offer so I used it to try out the classes. I do have to figure out whether or not I’ll continue in the new year. There are 2 main factors. One is the cost – the classes are not cheap! The other, which is more important, is time. Sometimes it can take me up to 1 hour to drive to the yoga class. The drive back is usually faster, but still … almost 4 hours of my day can go just for Hot Yoga. It makes it very difficult to get other things done.

I knew that I had been wanting to rejoin CrossFit for a while. So far I am loving the vibe and I’m enjoying the workout. It’s not cheap either, nor is it close to my house, but I’ve decided that I will continue in the new year. The challenge now comes with trying to balance it with my Jiu-Jitsu training.

The class timings aren’t an issue. It’s trying to figure out how to balance the soreness and fatigue!! I know that getting back into CrossFit will be accompanied by training pains … they definitely had an impact on how well I moved on the mats for Jiu-Jitsu. I don’t want my muscle soreness to negatively affect my Jiu-Jitsu. This means that I’m going to have to train smart and find the balance between challenging myself and not pushing myself too far. This also means that I’ll need to get good rest and eat properly. Yes, in the end, it’s all about balance!
