The launch of our women’s self-defense program at Watford Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was AMAZING! Teaching the course to a group of enthusiastic and energetic women was such an honor and thrill for me! What made me happiest was that everyone left class with big smiles on their faces and eagerness to continue to learn.
I think one of the things that makes this curriculum different from others is that it is based on indisputable principles that aren’t dependent on a person being particularly athletic or strong. Rather, the moves can be learned by everyone because they underlying principles (of leverage, solid foundational base, distance control) can be applied to every single person.
Moreover, the techniques themselves are not complicated. Sure it’ll take time to remember the details and build the proper reflexes to make the move an instinctive reaction, but the most important thing is that when done correctly, the moves will work. You don’t rely on a precisely aimed kick or a full intensity punch (with hope that the strength advantage is on your side). You learn how to adapt the moves for your body and for that particular situation in order to make them work.
It was so awesome getting a chance to explain these concepts to the women and teach them some moves. Plus, I didn’t just talk about the physical moves, but I also addressed the attitude, mentality, and emotional responses – all key elements to proper, effective self-defense.
Yes, it’s definitely been a thrill. Learning Jiu-Jitsu opened up a whole new world of confidence and courage for me — I am beyond excited to get the opportunity to now teach this women’s class. The best is yet to come!
